SP Energy Networks vast transmission network in central and southern Scotland transports electricity around the country on a 24/7 basis ensuring the lights go on and business is well placed to get going for the day.
The modernisation projects SPEN deliver ensure our infrastructure carries out this service safely and effectively – we have been carrying out a major refurbishment of YW and YX 275 kV overhead lines which started in 2015 and have successfully completed replacing the conductors along with the majority of other maintenance involved. As the project nears completion we are at present carrying out foundation work at a number of the towers which will be completed in 2023.

The routes which runs between Windyhill substation to the north of Glasgow and Dalmally in Argyll have a total of 255 towers. As mentioned, the wiring / reconductoring is now completed along the 93 kilometres of the combined routes. SPENs Land Officers have had a significant part to play in this project putting in place the required access arrangements with the dozens of land owners involved. These overhead connections transport power generated at Cruachan Hydro and the project has been geographically challenging for the construction team with much of the infrastructure being isolated and exposed to the all weathers. SPENs refurbishment and modernisation projects ensure the transmission network is supporting the countries move to clean energy and a more sustainable environment.
