Kincardine Substation Switchgear Replacement Project

Kincardine Transmission Substation is situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth in Fife nearby the village of Kincardine.

SPEN Transmission commenced a major construction project at the substation in March 2019. The site is located on reclaimed land on the north shore of the Firth of Forth and plays an important role in central and southern Scotland’s electricity network.

The project is part of SP Energy Networks investment and modernisation programme and will involve the replacement of the ageing existing 275 kV switchgear with the construction of a GIS Building (Gas Insulated Switchgear). The new building will be erected on a raised platform which will add additional protection to the existing coastal defences already at site.

The programme of work is scheduled to be carried out in different stages around a live substation environment and will involve the demolition and removal of the concrete gantries on which the existing switchgear is mounted.

The Project is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2022 and will cost in excess of £20 million.
