About the Project

About the Project

As our electricity network continues to evolve, and demand for power continues to grow, the ability to actively manage our network becomes ever more critical.

Fault level management is a key part of that, which is why we’ve been working on new and innovative technology that allows us to measure and manage fault levels in real time.

As part of trials we are running, prototype monitors are installed in substations across Chester, Warrington and Liverpool, allowing us greater visibility of the entire electrical network at any given time.

Benefits

Benefits

Successful roll out of this fault level management technology will:

  • Help us actively manage our electricity network in real-time, with greater visibility
  • Enable new connections to be added to our network at a much lower cost
  • Enable increased renewable generation connections, in turn supporting the race to net zero
  • Potential industry savings of £5million per year if rolled out across our network, and huge potential savings if rolled out nationally too
  • Remove the need for expensive and time-consuming switchgear replacement in substations in the applicable areas of the network – saving significantly on repairs, hours of engineer labour and closed substations
