Windyhill Substation is situated in West Dunbartonshire to the north of Glasgow and is a key hub in central and southern Scotlands transmission network infrastructure.
SP Energy Networks have a central role in supporting the nations move to net zero and ensuring our substations and overhead lines are operating effectively and efficiently is a priority for everyone at SPEN.
Work commenced at Windyhill in early 2022 which involves the replacement of the existing 275 kV switchgear which has served the network for several decades.
With an investment cost of over £50 million, the programme of work includes the construction of a Gas Insulated Switchgear Building (GIS) which will house the new equipment and thereafter allow the existing 15 bays of 275 kV switchgear to be demolished and removed along with the reconfiguration of other associated apparatus.
The construction activity will take place within the substation being delivered in stages which at times will involve vehicle movements. The project is scheduled to be completed in the last quarter of 2025. There will be no disruption to local electricity supplies.
