Is Your Project Idea Feasible?

For your project to be a success, there needs to be enough resource to make it economically viable. Questions such as “how much will it cost?” and “how much energy will it save or produce?” must be answered before deciding if the project can move forward. Feasibility studies offer a detailed assessment of both the technical and economic elements of a project idea to assess whether they are viable. You may wish to carry out an initial, high-level, pre-feasibility study to ascertain your project’s potential before employing a professional consultant to carry out a full feasibility study.

A good feasibility study should assess the viability of a project in terms of initial resource assessment, energy production, site location, environmental constraints, grid connection issues such as proximity and ability to export, likely infrastructure costs and the likelihood of securing planning consent. It should enable a community to make a considered judgement on whether it is worth taking the project any further. It is far better to decide not to proceed with a project at a fairly early stage than find after considerable time and expense that the project cannot go ahead.

There may be grants available to help with the cost of this work - please see the Funding & Financing page for further details. If the conclusion of the study is that a project is feasible, detailed development work can begin.
