132kV Overhead Line and Cable
SP Energy Networks was granted consent under Section 37 of the Electricity Act 1989 to construct a new overhead line as part of an overall investment programme of £13m to reinforce the electrical infrastructure across Anglesey. This will facilitate future growth and development, as well as provide an increased resilience of supplies to the existing 38,000 homes and businesses.
The company is constructing a new 132,000 volt wood pole line, 750 metres in length from the area east of Valley across the A55 to the north of Caergeiliog, then 650 metres of underground cable into Cymyran Road to our existing substation, where an additional transformer will be installed. At the same time, SP Energy Network's plans will see 340 metres of existing overhead lines and seven wooden poles being removed just north of Valley.
The underground cable has been installed along Cymyran Road and is currently being tested. The overhead line is mostly constructed as all of the wood poles are in position. The remaining works for the overhead line include the conductoring, which requires a short closure of the A55 to install the conductors across the road and I am pleased to say that we have permission for this in January 2019.
We aim to provide further information on the road closure in the coming weeks, though please be assured we are aiming to minimise the disruption by closing the road in the early hours of the day.
The works to install the new equipment in the Caergeiliog substation is continuing and we are aiming for completion in the Autumn of 2019.
33kV Overhead Line and Underground Cable
SP Energy Networks have been working closely with landowners to agree a route for a new 33kV overhead line and underground cable between Llangaffo and Llanfairpwll. The route of the overhead line has now been finalised and we have submitted an application to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for consent to construct the overhead line. Two sections of the route will be placed underground; past the Bryn Celli Ddu scheduled monuments and as the route runs through Llanfairpwll. If consented, SP Energy Networks aimed to construct the overhead line and underground cable in summer 2019.
Mark Sobczak, Head of 132kV Programmes at SP Energy Networks, said: "As well as strengthening the existing network in Anglesey, our upgrade plans will support new connections and local generation projects. There is currently approximately 80MW of local power generation connected to the network with a further 83MW contracted. The level of generation enquiries and connections remains high and is anticipated to increase. This project will ensure that future growth in Anglesey can be supported."
