SP Energy Networks (SPEN) have a licence obligation to provide electricity generators with a connection to the electricity system in this area and, in line with this, is proposing to construct a new 132kV trident double ‘H’ wood pole overhead line connection from the proposed Newlands Hill Wind Energy Hub development to existing Fallago Rig substation. The connection will be approx. 6km in length and will pass through East Lothian and Scottish Borders.
Routeing Phase
The Newlands Hill Wind Energy Hub 132kV Connection Project is currently at the routeing consultation stage, before progressing to Environmental Impact Assessment (if required) and subsequent application for consent.
SPEN is committed to undertaking meaningful and wide-reaching consultation and is therefore currently planning on holding one in-person consultation event. This event will be held at the following location, time and date:
Friday 4th October 2024, 3pm – 7.30pm: Gifford Village Hall, Gifford, Haddington EH41 4QJ
SPEN is seeking views on the proposals and the routeing work which has been undertaken to date for the Project. As part of the consultation, we would be grateful for your views on the following:
- The preferred route for the connection;
- Any of the alternative route options considered during the routeing process; and
- Any other issues, suggestions, or feedback you would like SPEN to consider.
A Routeing and Consultation Document has been produced which provides details of the routeing process and how the preferred route for the connection was achieved.

Please note - Comments at this stage are informal and are made to allow SPEN to determine whether changes to our preferred route are necessary. Following establishment of the proposed route, SP Energy Networks intends to submit an application to the Scottish Ministers for consent under section 37 of the Electricity Act 1989 and deemed planning permission under section 57 of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997. Submission of the Section 37 application is currently anticipated for July 2026. Following this, the Scottish Government will undertake a formal consultation, during which there will be further opportunity to comment on our proposals directly to Scottish Ministers.
