SP Energy Networks is making a significant investment in Dumfries & Galloway by modernising the area’s electricity system.
The 132kV electricity transmission system in Dumfries and Galloway has not changed since it was built, over 80 years ago. Although it has served communities well, it is at the end of its life and needs updating.
We need to replace around 44km of new 132kV overhead lines between Kendoon and Tongland.
This will secure local electricity supplies and provide some increase in transmission capacity to connect more new renewable generation to meet Scotland’s energy targets, if it is needed.
Once built, we will be able remove existing overhead lines and towers where we no longer need them.
We aim to complete the project by 2023.
