£6 million reinforcement project in Merseyside underway
Work on a £6 million reinforcement project in Merseyside, to help ensure the continued reliability and resilience of the network is underway.
We are installing a new cable connection between our existing substations in Formby and Southport. This will help keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses as people make greener choices and demand for electricity increases.
Work on the project started in summer 2024, and will be completed in phases. We expect all work on the project to be completed by summer 2025.
The work will mainly involve digging a trench between and installing cable ducts along the route in sections, before filling in the trench and moving on to the next section.
All the locations and traffic management plans for the work will be clearly signposted in advance, so road users are clear about how any changes may affect their journey. We will always ensure access is maintained to properties.
We’re committed to keeping any impacts as low as possible while we carry out this vital work, and are keeping local people informed directly as our work progresses.
We do not expect electricity supplies to be interrupted at any point as a result of this work.

Work in Southport underway
Work in Southport underway
We’re now carrying out main work along the first phase of the cable route, near our substation in Southport.
The work involves digging a trench between and installing cable ducts along Russell Road, then Crowland Street, then on to Butt’s Lane. We will be crossing Norwood Street before reaching Haig Avenue, where we’ll join up with cable ducts that have already been installed. The work will be completed in sections.
We will be installing temporary traffic lights on Russel Road, Crowland Street, Norwood Street, Butts Lane this stage of the work.
We are also concurrently working on Heathfield Road where we have temporary traffic lights in place to allow our work.
If our team is working outside or near your property, we may ask you to move your vehicles so we can complete our work.

Work in Southport progressing to next phase
Our work in the area is progressing well. From 5 August, we will be installing cable ducts on Guilford Road. This will involve working within a one-way road closure on the section of Guildford between the junction with Heathfield and Halsall Road.
From there, we’ll be continuing our work up Guilford Road under temporary traffic lights.
Signs will be in place to make people aware of these traffic changes and we will complete the work as efficiently as possible to minimise the duration of the closure. A diversion will also be put in place and will be clearly signposted.
If our team is working outside or near your property, we may ask you to move your vehicles so we can complete our work.
