Vehicles operated by community groups to supplement services provided by other local transport operators, or on behalf of local councils, are referred to as community transport. Some operate pre-set routes whilst others provide a pick-up / drop-off service.
These services can reduce individual car use, saving CO2 emissions particularly when using electric vehicles such as the 16-passenger Mellor Orion E.
There are few community transport initiatives that utilise EVs right now but Community Transport Glasgow are in the process of converting their 16-strong minibus fleet to EVs. Read about their journey here.
For more general information on community transport, the Community Transport Association is a charity that represents and supports providers of community transport.
For an excellent all-round guide to electric vehicles check out the Energy in Motion website which features information on vehicle sharing, earning an income from EVs, and an EV buyers guide.
