Setting Up an EV Car Club or Community Transport Initiative

EV Car Clubs

Car clubs allow individuals and communities to access a personal vehicle without being tied to ownership. They are usually membership based schemes operated by community groups or private organisations where vehicles are available for short term hire. Car club vehicles are often available for collection in public spaces rather than “conventional” car hire hubs.

EV car clubs offer low carbon, flexible use vehicles and are a key component for future sustainable transport solutions. Read more about the benefits provided by EV car clubs here.

CoMoUK is charity that supports car clubs and shared transport and their website is well worth a visit if you’re interested in setting up your own community car club.

To find out more about what communities are doing, you can read about community-led car clubs such as South Ayrshire Community Transport, Car Bute and Rousay Egilsay & Wyre Development Trust (Orkney).

Community Transport

Vehicles operated by community groups to supplement services provided by other local transport operators, or on behalf of local councils, are referred to as community transport. Some operate pre-set routes whilst others provide a pick-up / drop-off service.

These services can reduce individual car use, saving CO2 emissions particularly when using electric vehicles such as the 16-passenger Mellor Orion E.

There are few community transport initiatives that utilise EVs right now but Community Transport Glasgow are in the process of converting their 16-strong minibus fleet to EVs. Read about their journey here.

For more general information on community transport, the Community Transport Association is a charity that represents and supports providers of community transport.

For an excellent all-round guide to electric vehicles check out the Energy in Motion website which features information on vehicle sharing, earning an income from EVs, and an EV buyers guide.
