SP Energy Networks (SPEN) have a licence obligation to provide electricity generators with a connection to the electricity system in this area and, in line with this, is proposing to construct a new 132 kV overhead line connection from proposed Daer wind farm development to existing Moffat substation. The new single overhead line will pass through Dumfries and Galloway and South Lanarkshire and will be supported on double ‘H’ design wooden poles and will be approximately 10 kilometres in length.
Our in-person public consultation event will take place at:
Moffat Town Hall: High Street, Moffat DG10 9HF, Monday 26th February 2024, 3pm till 8pm
SPEN is seeking views on the proposals and the routeing work which has been undertaken to date for the Project. As part of the consultation, we would be grateful for your views on the following:
- The preferred route for the connection;
- Any of the alternative route options considered during the routeing process; and
- Any other issues, suggestions, or feedback you would like SPEN to consider.
A Routeing and Consultation Document has been produced which provides details of the routeing process and how the preferred route for the connection was achieved.
Update to Proposed Wood Pole:
To date, SPEN have included images of Heavy Duty double ‘H’ wood poles within the Routeing and Consultation document, Consultation Leaflet and at the public consultation event held at Moffat Town Hall on Monday 26th February 2024. These images were included in error, and SPEN confirm the proposed Daer Wind Farm Connection Overhead Line shall comprise a double ‘H’ Trident wood pole. See images below.
The typical height of Trident ‘H’ poles above ground (including steel work and insulators) varies from 10m to 15m. While the typical height of Heavy Duty double ‘H’ wood poles is between 10 -18m in height.

Please note - Comments at this stage are informal and are made to allow SPEN to determine whether changes to our preferred route are necessary. Following establishment of the proposed route, SP Energy Networks intends to submit an application to the Scottish Ministers for consent under section 37 of the Electricity Act 1989 and deemed planning permission under section 57 of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997. Submission of the Section 37 application is currently anticipated for March 2023. Following this, the Scottish Government will undertake a formal consultation, during which there will be further opportunity to comment on our proposals directly to Scottish Ministers.
