NESO Transmission Connection Pause: What it Means for Embedded Distribution Customers

On the 15th January 2025 NESO announced a “Pause” on all transmission connection applications, Ofgem have approved this pause which will be effective from 29th January 2025 (see link below).

Decision on joint direction and Letter of Comfort requests on cut-over arrangements for new connection applications

Distribution customers can still apply to SP Manweb and SP Distribution for a connection application, however for any accepted generation application 1MW and above (SP Manweb) or 200kW and above (SP Distribution), we are unable to apply to NESO for an impact assessment on the transmission network until the first new application window opens later this year.

For clarity, NESO will not accept or process any new applications from 29th January until the first new application window opens later in 2025. The pause does not apply to embedded demand applications that require a transmission impact assessment, these applications will continue to follow the existing process.

For any accepted distribution offer that requires a generation transmission impact assessment prior to the pause, we will do our best to submit the application (on your behalf) to NESO before 29th January. However, we are not able to guarantee that such applications will be clock started by NESO before the pause comes into effect, all applications have to be clock started by 12th February 2025 for NESO to progress.

For any queries on the pause or anything related to the Connections Reform please email:

We are hosting a 90-minute webinar for our current contracted customers who have a Transmission Impact Assessment with NESO and as part of the Connections Reform will potentially be a part of the G2TWC process.
