The text below is the transcript from the Moving your connection point and electricity meter video.
If you're thinking of carrying out some home improvements and want to move your electricity meter and current connection point, it's much easier than you think. Firstly, it's important to note that if you want to move only your meter within 2 meters on the same wall, simply contact your electricity supplier, plus the company you pay your electricity bill to, and they may be able to assist. If however, you need to change your current connection point to a new location, SP Energy Networks are here to help.
The first thing you'll need to decide is where you'd like your meter to be placed. The decision is yours. However, they remind that it must be easily accessible and in an area large enough to accommodate the equipment. The meter must be positioned where it will not be damaged, so positioning in an airing cupboard, kitchen, or bathroom is not recommended.
If you want to reset the meter to the exterior of your property, you will need to install and maintain a wind and waterproof meter box. Once you've settled on the right location, you can make your application online and upload a plan showing where your current electricity meter is located and where you want to move it to. If you'd like an application form posted, just send your details to gettingconnected@scottishpower.com.
You can also get an estimate of how much the work may cost on our website. It's useful to know that you can keep costs down by completing any excavation work yourself. Once you have an understanding of the costs involved and are confident that you want to go ahead, just return the acceptance form with your payment and we’ll schedule the job.
The work will normally be completed within four to six weeks. Although, this can be longer if we need permission from the local authority or have to do work on someone else's lands. Your energy supplier is responsible for moving your meter. So at this point, you will need to contact them with details of your meter point administration number. This is sometimes known as NPAN, and you'll find it on your electricity bill. Once we've done this work, you'll need a suitably qualified electrician to connect your supply and carry out any internal wiring. Ideally, your electrician will be on-site when we are carrying out the work.
Still not sure? Please don't hesitate to contact SP Energy Networks. We are here to get you connected.
