Audio Transcript: Being prepared for a Power Cut

The text below is the transcript from the Being prepared for a Power Cut video.

SP Energy Networks own and look after the overhead power lines, the underground cables, and the substations that supply electricity to 3.5 million homes in Central and Southern Scotland, Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and North Shropshire.

Part of our job is managing power cuts. Thankfully, unexpected power cuts are rare. But when they do happen, it's our job to get your supply back on as quickly as possible. Occasionally, we may need to interrupt your power supply to allow our Engineers to carry out essential maintenance. To give you time to prepare, we will write to you at least 5 days in advance. In our letter, we'll give you the date and times we expect your electricity to go off and on. We'll also provide you with the telephone number to call for advice. Unfortunately, during storm or other emergency situations, we're not able to give you advanced notice of a power cut. So, it's sensible to make a few preparations now in case the unexpected happens.

Firstly, it's a good idea to keep our emergency telephone number. It's worth noting, we’re open 24 hours a day every day of the year. Put a battery powered torch somewhere you can easily find it, together with a supply of fresh batteries. And if you must use candles, please be extremely careful keeping them away from flammable materials, drafts, and children. If you rely on medical equipment, make sure wherever possible, that it has battery backup. You may also find it useful to keep the NHS helpline number to hand. Many modern telephones won't work in a power cut, so check that they have battery backup, or keep a charged mobile ready for use.

An analogue or plug-in phone will work. And if you have a smartphone, remember you can also contact us by Twitter and Facebook.

Most modern fridges and freezers will remain cold for a considerable time after the power has gone off. But do try to minimise the number of times you open the door. Switch off and unplug appliances, particularly if using sensitive equipment such as computers. Although, it is a good idea to leave a single lamp on to alert you when the power is restored. Many Central Heating and Water Systems won't work, so making some simple preparations now will help ensure you stay safe and comfortable, whatever the weather.

If using portable heaters, please take care where you put them and never leave children alone with them. During any power cut, we try to make sure our most vulnerable customers are given extra help. To achieve this, we keep a Priority Services Register. It's free to join, so if you or someone you know needs a little extra help, call us on this number or fill in the online form on our website. www.spenergynetworks.co.uk. Or contact us by Facebook or Twitter.
