SP Transmission have recently commenced a major infrastructure project in the Scottish Borders.
The project will involve the major refurbishment of a key overhead line which routes between Gretna and Chapelcross Substations. Known as AL Route, the line operates at 132 kV and has over 60 steel towers supporting the conductors.
The refurbishment of the line will include tower condition assessments and resulting maintenance along with the conductor and insulator replacement.
SP Energy Land Officers have been engaging with local landowners to ensure the required access arrangements are agreed and in place.
The investment cost of the activity is in excess of £19 million with the project due for completion in Q3 of 2025. This work is part of the £2 billion plus RIIO T2 price control period currently being delivered across SPENs infrastructure in central and southern
Scotland which will ensure the network continues to deliver a safe and secure energy supply as the nation moves ever closer to net zero.
