Storm Éowyn bring winds of almost 90mph

24/01/2025

Our engineers are working to restore power to customers as Storm Éowyn brought winds of almost 90 mph, causing significant issues across the electricity network.

There are currently 25,500 customers across central and southern Scotland and the Manweb area without power after Storm Éowyn battered the country. A rare red weather warning is still in place bringing falling debris and downed trees that have affected powerlines across the region.

Multiple repair teams are mobilised across our network area and working to restore customers where possible.  There are numerous road closures in place and extremely difficult conditions still ongoing, engineers are working to assess damage and identify key locations for repairs.

Safety remains our number one priority.  High wind speeds and unsafe conditions are hampering our engineers in undertaking repairs to the network but where safe to do so, are ready to restore customers as quickly as possible.

Guy Jefferson, SP Energy Networks’ Managing Director, Transmission, said: “With red and amber warnings issued across the country we moved teams and resources into place ahead of Storm Éowyn approaching and contacted vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register to give support.

“We’ve seen wind speeds of almost 90mph with conditions remaining treacherous, hampering our ability to assess and repair damage. As soon as it is safe to do so, our engineers will be out in the field working to get the power back on for people as soon as we can.

“For those currently without power, please be certain we are doing everything we can to get you back on supply as soon as conditions allow. If you’re experiencing a power outage please report it to us by calling the free, national emergency helpline 105.”

We have proactively contacted 75,000 customers on the Priority Services Register and have organised a number of warm hubs. Food vans are being mobilised and hotels are being offered to customers in urgent need.

SP Energy Networks invests billions to ensure its network is safe, reliable and resilient, but extreme weather conditions like Storm Eowyn’s strong winds increases the chance of power cuts.
