We are delighted to be supporting social enterprise Social Bite with its innovative project to build a village for homeless people in Edinburgh.
Staff have volunteered their services to design and install the electrical network required to power the planned purpose-built houses in Granton, Edinburgh.
Social Bite aims to produce an innovative, low cost, supervised, safe living environment for up to 20 homeless people for around 12 months each.
Work on 10 properties is expected to begin early next year (2017) and the first residents will move in by the summer.
The residents will be people who are currently living in mostly unsupported temporary accommodation, shelters and B&Bs. After 12 months Social Bite will help transition the residents into permanent accommodation and another 20 residents will be welcomed into the village.
Guy Jefferson, Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “We’re delighted to support Social Bite with their ground-breaking project to help those stuck in the cycle of homelessness back in to society. “We have a whole range of volunteers willing to help out, from electrical designers to experienced installation teams, and I’m pleased to also confirm SPEN will be providing all materials required free of charge.
“This is a project of real community benefit and with support from the public and private sectors, one I’m sure can make a real and lasting difference.”
