National Apprenticeship Week has kicked off, so we sat down with some of our apprentices to discuss their journey at SP Energy Networks so far. They shared the skills they’ve learned and the experiences they’ve gained throughout their time with us. Q: What inspired you to apply for apprenticeship?
“SPEN provide great career progression, you can start from anywhere and the sky is your limit. It’s a job for life.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“Understanding that it is on the job training while working towards a qualification and industry recognised certification inspired me. A fresh career path while maintaining my interests in management aspects too.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
Q: What motivated you to apply for this apprenticeship with SPEN over other companies?
“SPEN’s apprenticeships are very attractive and offer a wide range of skills and provide a lot of learning opportunities.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“SPEN’s direction given on the application website motivated me. A clear pathway was given and the further opportunities to work in Iberdrola’s other companies appealed to me also.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
Q: Can you describe a typical day in your apprenticeship?
“The role is very self driven and have to find what you wan to learn and work towards your set goals. I often head out with craftsman to explore the network and work towards my authorisations.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“It would be hard to describe a typical day. Remaining dynamic and open minded as a Project Management Apprentice can have you working on a number of different tasks, which allows you to network and gather information about many different business areas.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
Q: What skills have you developed since starting your apprenticeship?
“I have developed many skills for example communication, time management and planning skills. This is through working in the office and on site.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“I have developed my communication skills, organisation skills with managing stakeholders and meetings. Collaboration and adapting skills have developed, working in many different teams.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
Q: Can you share any highlights to date or memorable project or task you are most proud of?
“The first job I put people back on power is a memorable moment for me as it makes you realise the importance of your job and role.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“There are no memorable tasks that have been completed to date, but I am currently working on a Health and Safety project that will help ensure site and personal safety, through new practices and documentation and instil good manual handling techniques across all of our Logistics stores. The thought that I can potentially help the health and well-being of my colleagues is memorable.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship at SPEN?
“Definitely consider doing it as they will provide a great training plan and ensure you get the most out of the years of your apprenticeship.” (Hubert Przychoden- Power Engineering Apprentice)
“Remain open minded in every task that is approached. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and lastly, take advantage of every opportunity given while in the apprenticeship.” (Cameron Rankin- Project Manager Apprentice)
