Bright sparks get power safety lesson at agricultural show

17/08/2017

Young visitors to the Denbigh and Flint Show were given potentially life-saving lessons in power safety from SP Energy Networks at their stand.

Youngsters were given a lesson in keeping safe around electricity through an interactive virtual reality experience and other educational games.

PowerWise, an initiative run by SP Energy Networks, energy provider for Denbighshire and Flintshire, aims to raise awareness of the importance of electricity and power safety through a free online educational resource which is available to teachers, parents and kids at powerwise.org.uk.

Stephen Stewart, Distribution Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “As the energy provider in Denbighshire and Flintshire, we are committed to educating local children and young people on the importance of staying safe around electricity. We had real fun bringing our virtual reality experience to the show with it also being a hit at other agricultural shows we’ve attended this summer. We hope it helped young visitors to learn about the dangers associated with electricity in a fun, safe and engaging way.”

In the midst of summer, with families being out and about, SP Energy Networks share some top tips on how to stay safe around electricity this summer:

  • Check for overhead power lines – there are a lot of powerlines around and often the dangers they carry are unknown. When you’re fishing, putting up a tent or flying a kite or drone, be careful that you don’t hit any overhead power lines.
  • Be careful if playing next to a substation – never cross the fence into the grounds of a substation. You can contact SP Energy Networks if you lose a football or toy in a substation and we’ll retrieve it.
  • Don’t climb poles – there are plenty of hidden dangers around power line poles. As tempting as it might look, they should only be climbed by engineers with the correct safety equipment as even a low voltage overhead line is enough to cause serious injury or death.
  • Look out for the danger of death sign – the danger of death sign means just that. If you see this on any surface or area, just steer clear.
  • Keep the national 105 hotline and SP Energy Networks phone numbers somewhere handy - to report a power cut, damage to power lines or anything relating to local substations, you can call the new national freephone number 105. Alternatively, you can call 0800 092 9290 if in Central or Southern Scotland or 0800 001 5400 if you’re in Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales or North Shropshire, to talk to SP Energy Networks directly.
