£6m Network investment in East Kilbride

20/03/2019

SP Energy Networks has completed the build of a new Primary Substation in Lanarkshire following a £6m investment to reinforce the ageing network in South West East Kilbride.

The investment took place following detailed studies by the business which identified this part of the network as being at capacity, and  following indications from South Lanarkshire Council of potential development in the area..

Work is now complete on the construction of the new Primary Substation in Jackton. This includes the installation of more than 16 km of cables in the area, and the installation of new low noise transformers and modern switchgear.

The new Primary Substation was energised in October 2018 and now provides power to more than 2,000 homes and businesses in East Kilbride, with capacity for up to an additional 5,000 connections.

As part of the project, we have supported the installation of two community funded defibrillators after being approached by the Community Council. We provided an electrical connection and two stone pillars to accommodate the defibrillators in Jackton village and the village of Thorntonhall free of charge.

Craig Arthur, Distribution Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “The multi-million pound investment into the new primary substation in Lanarkshire will ensure that SP Energy Networks continues to deliver a secure and reliable service to  our customers in the Lanarkshire area. The work will safeguard the network for years to come and ensure our ability to support new customers as the number of residents in the area continues to grow.”
